While I was on the phone this afternoon, having to renege on a commitment, the sweet person on the other end of the line reminded me of the toll never saying "no" can take on you physically and mentally. She told me that she was just like me when she was younger, trying to do it all (and succeeding!), and it eventually caught up to her physically. She shared a scripture from 1 Thessalonians. Paul told the residents of Thessalonica to "Make it your ambition to lead a quite life..." (1 Th 4:11). My life isn't very quiet right now.
Shea starts school on the 23rd. We have to be out of the house we are leasing on the 31st. The house we are building probably won't be ready until the second week of September. So, we are going to pack and move all our things into storage and live out of suitcases for a couple of weeks in the spare bedroom of my mother's house. We could stay here longer, but it's a 30 minute drive to school from here without traffic and traffic is terrible going into town in the mornings. My mother lives in town, so we think that will make life a little easier for at least a couple of weeks. In addition to all of the packing, moving and driving, I have my freelance work and all of the commitments I've made to keep up with. Oh, and the spike in lumber costs blew our construction budget, so we are laying, hand-scraping, and finishing an entire house of hardwood floors ourselves. I'm tired just typing all of that.
So, for the next month or so, I'm saying "no". I'm taking a blog break. I'll be back once we get moved and settled.
But, I don't want to leave you hanging, so I'm going to do a little giveaway in hopes that you'll come back. I'm going to share one set of fat-eights of my Katie Jump Rope collection. That's 11" x 18" cuts of the 33 fabrics you see above.
Want to win? Leave a comment. No need to become a follower, or Tweet, or blog about it, but if you want to do any of those things, it would make me smile. I'm going to let this one ride for a while; I'll pick a winner when I get back to the blog, mid-September. If your Blogger profile is set to hide your email, I won't be able to contact you if you are the winner, so be sure to check back.
I already feel a little weight off my shoulders. I'm going to try to find some time to read a book I bought last year called Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver. My friend on the phone this afternoon also suggested Simple Living by Jose Hobday, but I'll read that one after I get settled.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and I'll see you in September!

Hope you are enjoying your well deserved break :)
Here is a prayer for peace in your life during this transition time. I have a wonderful quote downstairs (which I can't get to due to foot surgery yesterday) that says peace is not having everything quiet in your life but having everything going on and peace in your heart in spite of the busyness. See you when you return.
Have a great break! :) I would love to win!
It can be so hard to prioritize family, school, and church comittments. I am going to read the books you recommend. Good luck. I hope your break is refreshing!

Enjoy your break! Everyone needs one once and awhile. Good luck with the move
The "quick to agree and volunteer" syndrome is fairly common among the mothers and grandmothers of this world. It is hard to learn to listen to that still, quiet, voice of guidance and learn to put ourselves, if not first, then at least on the list of priorities. Good luck with the move, the new school year, and the construction.
I have been coveting that fabric line, it is soo cute! Have a nice break!

You're so right about the power of saying no! It took me a long time to learn that, and it's very freeing! Good for you! The fabric looks yummy, I'd love to win - won't say no to that :)
It's sounds like you need a day to sew and relax. Thanks for the generous giveaway, I don't have any Katie Jumprope fabric yet, so this would be a fun group to win. Crossing my fingers and toes. :)

I'd just like to check back in to say what a debt of gratitude I owe you - you have inspired my sewing AND my blogging, and I hope you have a lovely break away from the ether ... but also hope that you return fresh and inspired ...
Learning to say NO is hard, it takes alot of time and feel good moments to realize you did the right thing. This past year I have really just started to say NO and I truly am a much happier person besides I not running all around town anymore. It takes some of the stress out of the equation. Enjoy your new place...it will be truly worth the wait.
I enjoyed your blog so much awhile back when I stumbled on it, that I just had to bookmark it so I could come back. Thanks for giving us something fun to look forward to online. I know I've enjoyed the posts. :)
Woa- you've got a lot of comments- but I sure would love to have a try at the fabrics- they're really cute and I'm an avid quilter. And don't worry- I'll be back to read your blog when you're back!

Good luck with your move. Look forward to checking out your blog when you have had a well earned rest. Enjoy
I am trying to lead a quieter life and one thing I am doing is separating myself from compulsively negative people. I used to think I could 'redirect' them by making positive comments, but then someone said "Oh, you are the 'peacemaker' in the group" to which I thought: "yes, I am a 'piece' maker!". :)
Thank you for a wonderful giveaway.
Enjoy your life! (which is a perpetual way of saying "have a good day")
Just say NO! . I love it! thanks for the giveaway and hope you had a smooth transition. Claire

This too shall pass :^) Good luck with the floor and the move, think how wonderful that new wood floor will be when it's done. We are going to put a wood floor in our home, hopefully next year, but aren't going to attempt to do it ourselves. So I admire your ambition to attempt it. THe fabrics are darling, thank you so much for the chance to win them.
Been there...totally understand! You are wise to stop and smell the roses while you can. May you come back rested and refreshed and renewed in the Spirit. BTW, I'd love to win those lovely fabrics...got two brand new granddaughters to sew for!

I must say yes to saying NO! I'm currently guilt-ridden about one commitment I made that I have not lived up to ... it's good advice! I hope your move is going well, and that you are able to relax a little. Thank you for the giveaway!
Hope your break has been productive and refreshing and that you've not had to feel pressured into saying "no!"
Thanks for the chance to win, that fabric line is delightful.
I hope the move and getting settled is going well for you! Good on you for saying no. I for one will be here when you return :)
Didn't read that book and didn't know the scripture but it's been a year of "quiet life" for me and it's made a HUGE difference - for me and for my family.
Like anything ... it takes practice.
Good luck during this "trying time". One idea that works for me when asked to do something, etc. I make myself wait 24 hours until making the commitment. That little bit of time has saved me bunches. Good luck with your moves and house building. You will love your new home!
I would love to win the fabric! I am a beginning quilter who is just starting a stash, but there's only so much I can do while I'm broke and in college, haha. Thanks for the giveaway, good luck with the move, and your blog is great!!
Good luck!!
Life is stressful, and anyway you can de-stress is good!
Thank you for this wonderful giveaway. I hope you've had at least some time to rest!

I learned to say "no" a bit more when I had my first baby...and then I found quilting, and can't say "no" to save my life! :o)
Good luck getting it all done. Sadly, prioritizing and setting boundaries is something we all have to learn the hard way. :o)

Wow - generous giveaway! I hope that I am not too late to "put my name in the hat"! I sincerely hope that this post finds you close to completing/moving in and settling into your new home!
I love Katie Jumprope ..Thanks for the opportunity
Good for you saying 'no'. I have to tell you...when I was in my twenties and a family business opportunity presented itself that I had a gut feeling would eventually turn bad I turned to my dad for advice. He said, "It is easier to say 'no' in the beginning and just have a 'few' hard feelings, rather than saying 'yes' and having tons of hard feelings on down the road." I have kept this as my guide.
No is a good thing...better yet...'no' is a great thing!!
By the way...I can't believe I missed out on your hexe quilt along. Will it still be up and going when you get back?
Take care of yourself. And on difficult days...remember the sweetest words in the bible..."..this too shall pass!"
Hugs!
I need to be more like you and say no :)
I have committed myself to a birthday skirt for my mother; a dress for a family reunion for myself, 2 baby quilts for neices and bridesmaid dresses for a neice. On top of my two kids - one a senior and one that is 8. One is in the band the other a pee-wee cheerleader so we have football full swing. Plus we have horses and hay to cut and bale, etc. My husband just told me at lunch today that I need to learn how to say no; that I have overcommitted myself.
Good luck with your transition. Be sure to invest in some good kneepads for those floors :)
genapounders@gmail.com
oh, heck, I'll throw my name in too! Can you believe I don't have a single drop of KJR? I know....(-:
Hope your move went well - it's a stressful thing to do. I have to do it myself in the spring. Best of luck!!!
