A little rambling, a blog break, and a giveaway.

I have a problem. I'm terrible at saying "no".

Male House FInch
While I was on the phone this afternoon, having to renege on a commitment, the sweet person on the other end of the line reminded me of the toll never saying "no" can take on you physically and mentally. She told me that she was just like me when she was younger, trying to do it all (and succeeding!), and it eventually caught up to her physically. She shared a scripture from 1 Thessalonians.  Paul told the residents of Thessalonica to "Make it your ambition to lead a quite life..." (1 Th 4:11). My life isn't very quiet right now.

Shea starts school on the 23rd. We have to be out of the house we are leasing on the 31st. The house we are building probably won't be ready until the second week of September. So, we are going to pack and move all our things into storage and live out of suitcases for a couple of weeks in the spare bedroom of my mother's house. We could stay here longer, but it's a 30 minute drive to school from here without traffic and traffic is terrible going into town in the mornings. My mother lives in town, so we think that will make life a little easier for at least a couple of weeks. In addition to all of the packing, moving and driving, I have my freelance work and all of the commitments I've made to keep up with. Oh, and the spike in lumber costs blew our construction budget, so we are laying, hand-scraping, and finishing an entire house of hardwood floors ourselves. I'm tired just typing all of that.

So, for the next month or so, I'm saying "no". I'm taking a blog break. I'll be back once we get moved and settled.

Katie Jump Rope Collection
But, I don't want to leave you hanging, so I'm going to do a little giveaway in hopes that you'll come back. I'm going to share one set of fat-eights of my Katie Jump Rope collection. That's 11" x 18" cuts of the 33 fabrics you see above.

Want to win? Leave a comment. No need to become a follower, or Tweet, or blog about it, but if you want to do any of those things, it would make me smile. I'm going to let this one ride for a while; I'll pick a winner when I get back to the blog, mid-September. If your Blogger profile is set to hide your email, I won't be able to contact you if you are the winner, so be sure to check back.

I already feel a little weight off my shoulders. I'm going to try to find some time to read a book I bought last year called Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver. My friend on the phone this afternoon also suggested Simple Living by Jose Hobday, but I'll read that one after I get settled.

Enjoy the rest of your summer and I'll see you in September!

I have to confess something Melanie. I am very new to this "blog" thing and happened to come across your site when I was looking for info on hexagon piecing. I have absolutely fell in love with your site and check it like a crazy woman!! In fact, when you didn't post for a few days while your daughter was at camp, I was going crazy! So, you can imagine how sad I am that I won't be able to see the incredible things you post for awhile :(. All kidding aside, I admire you for acknowledging that sometimes we just need to slow down so that we can hear our God whispering to us. Sometimes He doesn't want to compete with the "noise" in our lives. You will love the book Having A Mary Heart in a Martha World. My bible study group read that book and we really enjoyed it. Enjoy your time off and I will be anxiously awaiting your return. Blessings - Stacey

My goodness your plate is full! It helps if you practice saying no. I have to practice or I just can't help myself. It also helps to use your spouse- I have started saying, "Let me talk to my hubby first and make sure this committment will work for our family." I have to keep that at the front of my mind- family first! Good luck with all the transitions, and pack a box of your favorite cleaning supplies to put somewhere you will remember them. That's what I forgot the last time I moved. And bath towels for the shower! Those took weeks to find!

You are a smart lady to put the blog on hold. Learning to say no and not feeling guilty is a very good thing. I think saying no (even if you feel guilty may be a good thing sometimes.) Some years ago, I learned to say "no, thank you for thinking of me. But no." You don't have to explain or apologize.

Would love this assortment of fabrics so different from what I normally use.

Good luck with the complicated move!

Good luck with the move and finishing the floor. I was like you many years ago, I just couldn't say no. A friend gave me a book about saying no with out feeling guilty, I read the first chapter, it so much sense that I embraced the idea. My friend then asked me to babysit (fifth weekend in a row) I said no and she started to work on me and I told her but your the one who said I should start saying no, and she said but I didn't think I'd be the first you'd s**t on! I laughed but I still didn't babysit. Guess what we're still friends! It gets easier believe me.

Good for you, Melanie. Wow you really have your hands full, You should say no now and then, its a hard thing to do because you want to be everything to everyone all the time, been there done that bought the shirt :O) It is hard to say no sometimes but you have to take care of you so you can take care of your family the extras come after.

I would love to be in the drawing for your giveaway

I learned a long time ago that it is ok to say no and glad you gave the scripture reference. Good reminder to myself to have a quiet life. Good luck with your new home.

Learning to say 'no' is one of the hardest things for many of us to learn. I think I've finally taught my husband the word when it comes to so many activities wanting his time. Good luck on your all of your moves, temporary and permenant. I would love to win your giveaway!

Yay for breaks! I've been learning to take more myself and ask hubby for some time alone (he'll take the 3) if I need it. It's been great! :)

Your closing line reminded me of an old song...I'll be alone each and every night
While you're away, don't forget to write
Bye-bye, so long, farewell
Bye-bye, so long
See you in September
See you when the summer's through
Here we are (bye, baby, goodbye)
Saying goodbye at the station (bye, baby, goodbye)
Summer vacation (bye, baby bye, baby)
Is taking you away (bye, baby, goodbye)
Have a good time but remember
There is danger in the summer moon above
Will I see you in September
Or lose you to a summer love

Hope to see you back here soon. Thanks for the chance to win that yummy scrummy fabric. Hugs Naomi

Now I'm tired too, reading all that you are doing! There are only 24 hours in a day, you have to sleep sometime, so saying "No, I'm sorry, I can't" is surely the most reasonable thing to respond! Good luck on all your upcoming deadlines and excitement. I love Katie Jump Rope and would love to win some cuts. Thanks for the opportunity. I am becoming a follower, too!

Best of luck with the new house. The people that we bought a house from (once upon a time) were building a new house... and their contractors were MONTHS behind. You may be better off doing a lot of it yourself!

We were discussing in our ladies bible study group today that sometimes saying no is better than over committing ourselves and wearing ourselves out. Glad that you're taking it slow and taking a break. I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

Love the pics ... they are just beautiful. Stumbled upon you yesterday and found something that made me smile. The give away is so so generous and would love to win this (or anything ever)! Happy times to the winner).

Best of luck to you getting it all done and not pulling out your hair in the process. Being a little older than you, I can say I have been where you are. Here's my advise. 1/2 hour in the tube EVERY NIGHT whether you are dirty or not! Dim lights, bubble bath, book, and candles optional, but definitely door shut! After awhile you will begin to unwind and remember to take care of YOU first, family second, and the rest third. Deep breaths.

Oh my, I am tired out from reading your post, and I'm like the 400th comment, so you must be tired of reading comments too! What a great giveaway though! I don't know how you can part with such lovliness, but feel free to share it with me!

Saying "no" once in a while is liberating - although difficult to do sometimes.
Thank you for sharing some beautiful fabric.
