While I was on the phone this afternoon, having to renege on a commitment, the sweet person on the other end of the line reminded me of the toll never saying "no" can take on you physically and mentally. She told me that she was just like me when she was younger, trying to do it all (and succeeding!), and it eventually caught up to her physically. She shared a scripture from 1 Thessalonians. Paul told the residents of Thessalonica to "Make it your ambition to lead a quite life..." (1 Th 4:11). My life isn't very quiet right now.
Shea starts school on the 23rd. We have to be out of the house we are leasing on the 31st. The house we are building probably won't be ready until the second week of September. So, we are going to pack and move all our things into storage and live out of suitcases for a couple of weeks in the spare bedroom of my mother's house. We could stay here longer, but it's a 30 minute drive to school from here without traffic and traffic is terrible going into town in the mornings. My mother lives in town, so we think that will make life a little easier for at least a couple of weeks. In addition to all of the packing, moving and driving, I have my freelance work and all of the commitments I've made to keep up with. Oh, and the spike in lumber costs blew our construction budget, so we are laying, hand-scraping, and finishing an entire house of hardwood floors ourselves. I'm tired just typing all of that.
So, for the next month or so, I'm saying "no". I'm taking a blog break. I'll be back once we get moved and settled.
But, I don't want to leave you hanging, so I'm going to do a little giveaway in hopes that you'll come back. I'm going to share one set of fat-eights of my Katie Jump Rope collection. That's 11" x 18" cuts of the 33 fabrics you see above.
Want to win? Leave a comment. No need to become a follower, or Tweet, or blog about it, but if you want to do any of those things, it would make me smile. I'm going to let this one ride for a while; I'll pick a winner when I get back to the blog, mid-September. If your Blogger profile is set to hide your email, I won't be able to contact you if you are the winner, so be sure to check back.
I already feel a little weight off my shoulders. I'm going to try to find some time to read a book I bought last year called Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver. My friend on the phone this afternoon also suggested Simple Living by Jose Hobday, but I'll read that one after I get settled.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and I'll see you in September!

Amen to saying "no" once in a while. I totally understand where you're coming from. Good luck with all the moving around. I hope it goes smoothly for you. Thank you for the chance to own such a wonderful collection of fabric.
A break is good! And, your fabric line is absolutely delightful, please include me amongst those wanting a piece or two! Thanks!
Whew... that's good. Now, in my transition, I won't have to come back to 5,000,000 emails. I'm moving 2200 miles away... my house got foreclosed because the Realtor I used didn't follow up on the Short sale in a timely manner and they aren't extending SS's anymore with Fannie Mae. So, now, I packed up my house, flew my sister out to help because I was stressing so badly and now it's all in the truck to be driven away and then I will drive with 2 cats in the car for 2-3 days - yeah!! So, I won't have internet access to read your blog for awhile. So, actually "thanks" for taking a break. :) Hang in there... everyone I know seems to be going through their own "crazy" right now. I'll just have something to look forward to next month... I can't figure the settings out and I never win... So, we'll just call this a comment to encourage you onward!! Until later!!
Good luck and thanks for this beautiful giveaway. Hugs from France.
Good luck with the move. Would absolutely love the fabric, my stash is looking very sparse lately and I am aching to make something new.
Hey Melanie, Thanks for the reminder to slow down and say "no" every once in a while. I'm going to check out those books you mentioned. Thanks also for your generosity, giving me the opportunity to win such an awesome prize.
Wow, Melanie! Thanks for the chance to win such a fabulous prize. I would totally LOVE and use this fabric in future projects.
I hear you about the whole "no" thing. Sometimes it's hard to figure out what you can and can't reasonably do. It's hard to say no!
emily.nudelman@gmail.com
Good Luck with the move, hope it all goes well without too much stress. I look forward to photos of the new house.....and thanks for the giveaway invite!
Yes you do get better at saying "No" as you get older! Good luck with the move. We once put our home into storage for 10 weeks whilst my two small children and I stayed with two lots of relatives waiting for our house to be built. My husband worked in the new area in the week and returned to the bosom of the family at the weekends. Hard, but it can be done. Thanks for the Giveaway - sounds great!
Good luck. Moving can be tough - especially if you have construction work going on at the same time. Just keep sight of how wonderful it will all be when it's all finished and you can enjoy your new space.
good luck with your move and transitions! we moved into the house we built 2 years ago. it's an amazing experience but a ton of work.
Good luck with the new beginnings! I've taken a couple of blog breaks over the last 3 years, and come back rejuvenated.
Good luck with the work on your new house! Take your time with the blog-break. And your giveaway is more than generous!
Take care!
There's a lot of us in this same boat right now. Yes please, give yourself a break. That book sounds good, I turn into Martha way too much sometimes. Oh the martyr in me...
When I see you again I will be 4700+ miles from where I am now.
What a busy time - definitely take a break. I for one will be here when you get back, looking forward to see how your house turned out. Exciting times, enjoy them!
oh sad day for me, we'll miss you until you come back, have a great break!!
Good for you to say "no"... it is hard to do. Good luck with the move. BTW I am a follower now :) See you soon! Thanks for the giveaway!
You are smart to take it easy over the next couple of months .... moving takes more of a toll than it may seem .
Who wouldn't love some Katie Jumps Rope !!
Good luck with the move. See you soon! Thank you for the giveaway.
Just finishing up my sixth move in six years. With all that, I think the worst pressure is what we put on ourselves. Give yourself a break! Of course I will return to your blog when you do as I already subscribe in my reader. You got me addicted to hand piecing hexagons for goodness sakes!
Amazing giveaway!
The saying no thing is a very good idea, I hope you enjoy your break and come back super refreshed. I'll miss your blog posts but look forward to your return.
Enjoy your break, what a lovely giveaway!
carlandrach@optusnet.com.au
Thank you for such a nice give a way. It is so sweet of you to share your beautiful fabrics with us. :o)
Please take your time in getting back. I understand about needing a break and striving to lead a quiet life. :o) There is a balance for sure. In the meantime, I am here and will be back, with or without a give a way! :o)
I think you will enjoy Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. :o)
Sincerely ~ Tricia
Good luck with everything! Yours is one of my favorite blogs, so I wont forget you while you are gone:)
We'll miss you until you come back, thanks for a giveaway.
You sound so like me! It's so hard to say no but you know what I've learnt as I've gotten older is that you need to take time for yourself or before you know it you're doing everything for everyone else and then end up in a heap totally exhausted.
Enjoy your ME time and see you when you get back :) Barb.
Wow, you really do have a lot on your plate right now! Good luck with the move, and I hope you get to enjoy some peace when the chaos is over.
Melanie ~ you are so smart to take some time for yourself ~ you have so much going on right now ~ we'll look forward to your return.
Katie Jump Rope is one of my favorites...my stash is almost gone!
Good on you for giving yourself a much needed break by saying no. I'm sure you'll come back all refreshed and feeling a lot more in control of your life. Your 'Katie Jump Rope' collection is to die for by the way!
thankx for the lovely give away inmidst of moving and living out of suitcases. Hope you will be able to saddle down soon.
Great give away! I'd love to put my name in the hat as well. And good luck with the move! It's very tiring, but on the other hand, if you move to a brand new house, it's well worth it, right?
smart idea! You will be missed while you are gone ...
Good luck with the move, I am sure it will be worth the wait : )
Keep on smiling!
You WILL be missed but this is a break you really need to take. It's important for you to take care of your family first. Us bloggers can wait with anticipation for your return. Thanks for sharing your new Katie Jump Rope fabric with us. Have a safe move.
Oh, my! You do need a blogging break! Good luck with the move and the transition (and the floors!) I would love to win that yummy fabric! I have been following your blog for awhile now. I enjoy the inspiration. Take care and "see" you in September!
Hey, good for you! Sometimes it's really hard for moms to say "I need this time for me" because we are so accustomed to always being there for others. Kudos for knowing what works for you, having the voice and conviction to say it, and best of luck in the next month's craziness! We'll be here when you get back!!
♥Duff
good luck with your move! Sounds like it will be a crazy time but hang in there!
Hi,
Wow! Those fabrics are gorgeous!
Thanks a lot for the chance and good luck with your move =D
Have a wonderful week!
Melanie - sounds like a break is a good thing at this point, but we will certainly miss you! As for the give-away....ohhh! I simply love Katie Jump Rope and it is so difficult to find these days. Thanks for such a great give-away!
Good luck with all the moving stuff - I hate the stress of moving. We will miss you, but look forward to pictures of the new house all done!
You've got a lot going on! I hope the next month or so brings calmness.
I'd love to be entered into your generous giveaway.
Ah, "No." When we're young we're told not to say it. That's what makes it so hard now! Good for you for stepping back and taking time for the most important thing in life-family.
I used to be the go to person. because veryone knew I wouldn't say no. I now have 2 stress related health issues and if I get stressed I hurt and cannot do things, so no is a very important part of my vocabulary. Please listen to your friend and learn the value of well placed nos.
Aw, it sounds like you need a break! You'll be sorely missed, but I hope your transition goes well and you're able to sneak in some hexie time here and there. :)
I'll miss you!!! Stay sane in the middle of the craziness! Oh yeah, and please count me in on the fabric chance!! :)
Good for you! And thank you so much for such a great giveaway. =)
What woman hasn't fallen into the trap of agreeing to too much stuff!? As I get ready to head back to the classroom this is a great reminder!
I hope your move goes well and you get settled into your new space quickly!
I am about to finish my first hexie project - thanks for all the great tips!

Good for you....a break is sometimes necessary. hope the move goes well....i'll be back next month!
I'd say enjoy your break, but I guess you may be too busy to have time to enjoy. Good luck in getting everything accomplished

You're a very wise woman to take a break and handle all that is on your plate. We'll be here when you get back. I'm reading Having a Mary Spirit by Joanna Weaver right now. I like it even better than her first book...it's my third time through it. Take care of yourself and thanks for the chance to win! Those fabrics are adorable.
I'll be happy when you are back and anxious to see pictures of your house. In the meantime, thanks for the giveaway and I'll keep working on hexies!
Haha My word verification is "booked."
How generous of you to share such a precious stash! Enjoy your break!
It is good to learn to say "no" and it is good to take a break once in a while. I have been following your blog for some time and was amazed to see how many things you were doing at the same time.
We look forward to hearing from you in September!! And thanks for the give away (I love those fabrics!!)

Hope you have a good move! Take all the time you need, we will be waiting for you to come back :)
good luck with all that. we all have tough periods in life but I try to enjoy the quiet peaceful times inbetween in hopes that the peace I gain will sustain me through the troubles.

Thank you so much for your generosity of some KJR love! Good luck with moving and enjoy your new home!!!
Good for you taking a break! I hope this whole transition is not too stressful and that you can find peace and enjoyment in it. The Thessalonians verse you shared is actually my life verse! Though I'm really in the same position as you as far as applying it.
Good for you... taking a step back is sometimes so hard to do but always worth the effort. I will miss you when you are gone... I love reading your blog. Good luck with the move... how exciting.
Oh... and the Katie Jump Rope would be amazing... I am due in October and I can just see my squishy little babe wrapped in a quilt made from it!
Enjoy your break. Thank you for the lovely giveaway, love your blog and will miss you.
Good luck with everything....my Mom went through the same thing when they built their house, builder blew the budget and disappeared and she had to arrange finishing it and do it living from someone's guest house 40 mins away. Once it was over, she was so relaxed and happy...September will be here before you know it!

Good for you!
Learning to say "no"/set boundaries was my New Year's resolution in January -- I haven't totally mastered it, but I'm glad I'm working on it.
Best of luck with packing, renovating, school-starting and all the rest.
Good luck with all of your projects!
Ooo, good luck with everything! During times like that "Just keep swimming." Dori's mantra from Finding Nemo becomes my mantra. This keeps me moving which keeps me from getting bogged down and overwhelmed.
Smart girl to use scripture as your life guide! Hang in there! I'll keep working on my hexagons. :)
Busy busy busy- I hope you have a peaceful move- when your house is ready. Knowing when to stop is an important life lesson!

Wow, sounds like you have a lot on your plate right now! I totally understand what it's like to need a break. I hope your move goes smoothly and that you come back feeling refreshed. You'll be missed. :)
It's funny how such a tiny word can be so hard to say.
You have a busy time ahead and something has to give and better it's the blog than you!
I mailed your pincushion on Thursday so hopefully that should be with you in the next 3 or 4 days xxx
I started following your blog when I saw your winning entry on Spoonflower...I'm so glad I did. I love your page! I just started cutting out my first batch of 1" hexagons last night! I can't wait to get started! I totally understand about you taking a break! I'm right there with you girl! Enjoy it! Take care!

Have a break, catch up & recuperate...too much happening for you now..."see" you againwhen life settles a little.
I would love the chance to win this yummy fabric! And I will be back as well.....stalking...everyday....until you return :) Good luck with everything and try to enjoy the chaos.
I wish you well on your time "off". I'm moving, too, and often feel overwhelmed. I really enjoyed your scripture verse. Thanks for sharing.
Enjoy the break, book and new home. Also, thanks for the scripture. Look forward to seeing you in the Fall.
I do feel for you. I think that in any home renovation/building project there comes a point where all the excitement is gone and you just want it done! So good luck in moving.
And as for the giveaway. That is unbelievably generous - and yet I'm envious because you seem to have so much of the green ribbon fabric which is my favourite and I have only scraps of now.
Good luck with moving! Thanks for the chance at the giveaway!
Please don't apologize for having a normal non-blog world life. :) Good luck with your house projects.
Wow! You are one busy lady! Having been in the position of being both a mama and building a house, take it from me: a break from anything else you can take a break from is a GOOD thing!
Sounds like you're going to be one busy lady even if you start saying no! Take care of yourself & say no as often as you need to do. I look forward to your return (but no rush!) and thank you for the chance to win some of this amazing fabric!
Angelina
Love your designs - good luck with your move and getting settled in. Looking forward to see your creations when you get back!
I am amazed you have kept up on everything up to now. Sounds like those floors will be worth it! Hang in there. And think - your mom might cook some meals, ah a few free moments!
I enjoyed hearing you speak at the DMQG meeting last Thursday...and I have been a follower of your blog for awhile (I'm the cretin that didn't understand pi). Looking forward to seeing you back again in September...
Wow. sounds familiar - my ex and I did the same thing (moved everything to storage and moved in with my mom for a month) when the closing on our house got delayed. It will all be worth it when you're in the beautiful new house with the turquoise island! Highly recommend the book "Having a Mary Heart".
love that kjr! it's good to say no. enjoy your craziness!
Good for you saying "no." And good luck with the packing/move/start of school/finishing your house!! That's a lot on one plate. You can do it!
Good luck taking a rest! Pick me!
Good Luck...hoping everything goes very smoothly!
I say yes to no! Enjoy the "break" :)
Yay for mental health!! Enjoy your "you" time and thanks for hosting such a generous giveaway!
We just went through part one of a two stage move from one state to another. I am dreading the 2nd move. I hope you weather the next four weeks well and feel happy and refreshed to be in your newly remodeled home.

So proud of you :) I have that book, Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. Would you like to have a read along? A little book club of two? :)
Good for you for saying no for a while - it's a hard word, that one! (but thanks ever so for saying *yes* to a giveaway!!! Yes please, I say!!!)
I hope the moves, transitions and all that await you in the next month or so go as smoothly as these things can!
Melanie, take a serious break! As a mama of 7, I HAD to learn that no is not a bad word, even if sometimes I felt bad saying it. We will keep plugging away at our hexagons while you're gone.
Sounds like a break is just what the doctor ordered! I hope you can get everything done and have time to relax too.
Have a great break. We'll miss you. Thanks for the fab giveaway!
Thanks for the giveaway!
I am with you on feeling overwhelmed and over-committed. I've been feeling that way myself lately. Hoping this time of craziness passes, that you get in to your new home swiftly and get back to feeling "normal" soon...

Wow! This is a giveaway that will keep everyone up nights waiting for! Have a nice break and we'll see you in September! Enjoy your time away!
What wonderful bright colors! I'd love to make something with them. I hope your move goes smoothly!
Smart to learn the lesson of saying "no" at this point in your life! It took me a lot longer to learn that lesson. You will be missed, but will be greatly welcomed on your return!
belinda at gelhausen dot org
It's so hard to say no, especially for women for some reason. Good for you.
Love to see all that KJR together - would LOVE to win some F8s.
Good luck with the move and everything on your plate right now.
I completely understand where you are coming from! I have recently learned how to say "no" and put a limit on what commitments I make. Just today we diecided to move into a new house, probably in two weeks! A part of me is completely overwhelmed bu the idea of moving but I also look forwar dto the move and see the act of packing and letting unwanted items go (to the local charity shop) as a cathartic experience too!
Enjoy your break !! I'm looking forward to reading more when you come back.
no is always a tough one for me. I'm still learning! Enjoy your move. We'll see you back in September -Amy
i hope you enjoy your break! Don't go too long.
Virginia
Good luck with everything! A break from blog land is needed every now and again. :)
Good luck with the big move! Moving can be so stressful so you're very sensible to take a break. I'll miss you though! See you next month.
Nerys x
I know how hard it is to say no...
I hope you'll get settled soon & will have some time just for you!
Good luck!
Wise words from your friend (and Thessalonians!). I'm taking things far more slowly over here and I tell you, it's fabulous.
So is that Katy Jump Rope. Oh how I would love to win.
Good for you. I recently found your blog, and as my new favorite, I am going to miss you! You go, take a break, and get some of "life" taken care of. We will see you in September!
P.S. Yesterday in Church I played Mary and told the story of Lazarus. She truly had a way of leading a quite life. It was a wonderful experience for me.
Good luck with all your crazy transitions. I'm sure it will make it that much sweeter when you get into your new home - even though it might not seem like it right now.
I recently found you and am enjoying your blog.
I think women do not have a built in say "NO" button. As busy as we are we just still keep taking more not wanting to let anyone down. Enjoy your break...and see you when you return. :)
My hat is off to you and your husband for building your own home. My husband and I are building a large chicken coop which has taken almost all summer working on it every Friday through Sunday; I can't imagine building a whole house.
Good luck with the move(s). I can't wait to see pictures of your completed new home.
Thank you for the giveaway... I only found your blog a month or so ago but it really is a lovely blog! But as everyone knows a break is nice. I hope you have fun reading and taking time for you. Ill be back to read when you are! :)
Thanks again! Jenna

Hello. I saw this on Flickr and I am missing 4 of these prints for my collections so I had to stop by. I really enjoy your little slice of blogland and will follow.
I also wanted to say good luck to you with your move. We were planning on building this fall but decided to wait until next summer instead. My daughter starts pre-k the 23rd. I am so excited. Good luck to you, I hope its not too stressfull.
I will miss your postings so much but I am very happy for you that you will be soon moving into your new home. Will look forward to hearing from you in September. You inspire me so much with your lovely quilts. I have started my own quilt with your help. Take care, and enjoy your move.
Enjoy the break!
take a break. move in. get settled. take a breath....then....come back refreshed.
Saying "no" is also my hardest thing to do. But I've also learned that it has a valuable place in my life. I'm proud of you for realizing it, too! I would come back, even without the giveaway, but the giveaway is a lovely lovely thing to do! See you in the fall: good luck with your floors!
Fun fabrics!
Hope you have a relaxing break! Thanks for the chance at your giveaway!
It sure is hard to say "no"! Good luck with your move and all the busyness this time of year brings!
Well, now, I just found your blog today, and since you are taking a break, I'll sneak in and peruse your archived posts. I'm on the East Coast but lived just outside of Ft. Worth for many years. I love all things Texas, esp. quilters!! Good luck with all the changes going on right now, and I look forward to your future posts. ~karen
We all need to learn to say no (every once in a while) and just enjoy our life.
Good luck on your move...twice!
Good for you!! taking a break and taking good care of you is important! You'll enjoy Joanna's first book. I'm currently reading Having a Mary Spirit (her second) and am enjoying it. I'm sure you'll gain a blessing from it!
Good luck with the move!
When we bought our house which was not built at that moment we didn´t know that we would have to live for 12 month in a inbetween home ... it´s good to take a break, to slow down... I wish yoou will have a good start moving in your new house! And thank you for this more than yummy giveaway!
Take care!
Breaks are good, enjoy! Also, thanks for offering the give-away, I love the Katie Jump Rope line, and I missed out on buying some!! :)
Hope you rest well! It is hard being Mary when everything tugs at you to produce like Martha, but oh the reward of sitting at the Savior's feet! Everytime I think of that book title, I have to smile...and am reminded all over again the importance of slowing down and focusing on the eternal things.
Having just discovered your blog I'm a little sad to hear you won't be blogging for a while, but am glad you're taking time out for yourself and family.
I recently got married and am now living on the other side of the world. I've decided to try my hand at quilting (maybe as a way of feeling closer to my mum who is a quilter) and don't have much of a "stash" yet. Your fabrics are really inspiring to me, just my style, bright and vintagey. Winning them would really kick start my quilting habit! :-)
Looking forward to your fresh posts next month.
best of luck with the move.
Tina
Good luck with the move! Having moved more times than I can count in the last 21 years I know it's much easier if you cut out some of the extras in your life. God bless you and you family on this journey!
What an amazing giveaway! Thank you. Good luck getting settled in your new place, when you can!
I think so many of us can relate to the toll never saying "no" causes! Good for you to take a break where you can so that you are not stretched thinner than "necessary." I think I'm going to have to read that book sometime soon as well. We all need the reminders, encouragement, and strength that only Scripture can bring! Thanks for an awesome giveaway and I pray that the next month will be filled with blessings and strength from the Lord!!
Good luck with your time off and thank you for the amazing giveaway!
Thanks for the giveaway! I can understand the need to take a blogging break for a while... internet life especially can become overwhelming!
