Pincushion Caddy

I'm in love with this caddy! I liked the vintage fabric Anna Maria used, but I don't have a stash of authentic 1930's prints, so I used charm squares from the Hopscotch, Hello Betty, Snippets, and Wonderland collections.

Anna Maria herself said it is a bugger to make and it kind of was. I was meticulous about tracing the pattern pieces, cutting and sewing, but when I got ready to attach the outside to the inside, it didn't fit. There was about 4" difference in the circumference of the outside ball and the interior tube. I found in the Seams to Me discussion on flickr that I'm not the only one who noticed.

So, I re-drafted the interior pattern pieces to fit the outside I made and it fit together beautifully. My only issue is that after I carefully selected where I wanted the fabrics to go, I sewed the outside on upside down! The fabrics I wanted on the top are hidden on the bottom. I was too far into it when I realized what I had done, so this one will have to remain as is. Maybe I'll make another one later. Now that I have the measurements figured out, I think the next one will go together very quickly.

Love how it turned out! But don't you just hate it when measurements are off? You were quite resourceful and made it work for you. Adorable!

Okay, that was amazing turn-around time! I can't believe I'm staring at your final product. Seriously, it looks like it jumped out of Horner's book and onto your cutting mat. I love it. I wanted to make one the first time I saw it, but I think it's a little out of this newbie's league for now.

that turned out wonderfully. i like that it is big enough to hold some notions in the middle.

What did your measurements come out to be? I tried to fix mine, but I just got frustrated and tucked it to fit.

You would never know the trouble you had just by looking at it. I do want to make one of these one day so it's good to know what to expect with the measurements.

I love how you decide to make something and there it is the very next day! It turned out really cute.

Did you use the interfacing called for for the center tube? How much did you stuff it? I stuffed mine too much originally and my tube kind of collapsed. I couldn't get it back to hold it's shape, even after taking out some stuffing. Yours looks great!

The pattern is free, simply google "pincushion caddy pattern by Anna Maria Horner" :) and you can print it out (for those that do not have the book).
